Flea and Tick Prevention

It's important to take a lot of precautions to safeguard your pet’s health. Flea and tick prevention is one of these precautions. If your pet is not yet on one of these medications, it's time to see the veterinarian for the health exam that is needed to prescribe this medication. At Brandywine Veterinary Hospital, we have provided residents of Greenville and Chadds Ford with parasite prevention services for many years.

Flea and Tick Prevention

Ticks and Pets

Ticks attach themselves to a pet's skin and bite, continually drinking the pet's blood. This allows them to stay in contact with the pet's bloodstream, meaning bacterial infections can easily be transmitted to your pet. When a tick bites a pet, it can transmit many very serious diseases, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. These and other infections that can come from ticks can be fatal to pets. It's important to check your pet often for ticks and to remove any that you find. It's also best to have your pet on a flea and tick prevention medication to get rid of any ticks that do bite your pet.

Fleas and Pets

Fleas are a type of insect that many people consider to be nothing more than a nuisance. However, fleas too can spread several serious diseases to pets. Pets often have an allergic reaction to it when they are bitten by a flea. Fleas will multiply rapidly, creating a big infestation on your pet and in your home. Fleas can also give pet anemia, making them sick and weak.

An occasional flea combing can help to get rid of any fleas that try to tag along on your pet. Preventative medication is also helpful for keeping fleas away. If your home gets fleas, it can be a lot harder to get rid of them than it is to get rid of them on a pet, so stay on top of any issues with fleas.

Protect Your Pet Against Fleas and Ticks

Even if your pet doesn't go outside, it can still catch fleas and ticks that wander into the home. If you need a veterinarian to prescribe a flea and tick medication to your pet, call us at our Chadds Ford, PA, or Greenville, PA, office to make an appointment for a health exam.
